Despite multiple attempts to secure placement in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and following news of the opinion page’s closure, the MSC has chosen to self-publish a letter to the editor written by MSC President, Jim Welty.
In a March 26 op-ed, “Bruce Ledewitz: Pennsylvania is the climate change problem”, the author suggests that Pennsylvania is stuck in the past and lays the blame at your readers. Your readers deserve better than these falsehoods.
First, it’s telling that a professor would think natural gas and methane are separate products, when they are one in the same.
With this basic science-based lesson out of the way, let’s focus on other important facts.
Pennsylvania leads the nation in emissions reduction. Since 2005, CO2 emissions in the power generation sector have plummeted 46%. Volatile organic compounds are down 48% and there’s been a 93% and 98% reduction in nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides respectively. What does that mean? Cleaner air, fewer respiratory ailments, and vastly improved public health.
This is more impressive when you couple Pennsylvania’s reduction in emissions and increase in electricity generation.
All of this is possible because of Pennsylvania’s homegrown natural gas.
When it comes to the safe and efficient development of natural gas, Pennsylvania boasts the lowest methane intensity among all major natural gas producing states. This means our operators are among the most efficient and effective at preventing methane leaks.
Not only is natural gas development a win for the environment, it has also saved consumers $18 billion over the last two years.
Pennsylvania natural gas is the solution.
