Pittsburgh, Pa. – October 7, 2026 – Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) President Jim Welty issued the following statement:
“When the grand jury report was released in 2020, MSC raised concerns that it failed to account for Pennsylvania’s existing regulatory framework and the significant reforms already in place to govern shale development. Those concerns were echoed by the Department of Environmental Protection, which called the report ‘factually and legally inaccurate’ and ‘a disservice to the citizens of Pennsylvania’.
“Six years later, Pennsylvania has the benefit of additional experience, additional oversight, and a much longer record to evaluate. That record demonstrates that the Commonwealth’s approach has continued to support environmental stewardship, economic growth, and energy production under a robust regulatory system.
“The conversation around shale development should be grounded in facts and outcomes. The years since the report’s release have further reinforced the importance of evaluating Pennsylvania’s energy industry based on its actual performance rather than the misleading narrative presented in a single report.”
