Every day, MSC members and their employees continue to drive America’s energy future through the responsible development of Pennsylvania’s abundant natural gas resources. Earth Day is a time to reaffirm that commitment to energy security, economic growth and U.S. global leadership – powered by reliable, homegrown energy.

This Earth Day, we recognize Pennsylvania natural gas not only as a key part of building a cleaner energy present and future, but as a strategic asset strengthening our nation’s energy security. As we continue to innovate and grow, our focus remains clear: responsibly producing the energy that fuels American innovation, economic strength and global competitiveness.

Here are a few ways how:

Fueling America’s Future

Natural gas is the backbone of America’s energy system – delivering the reliable, on-demand power needed to sustainably grow our economy. In 2024, Pennsylvania produced over 7.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, ranking second nationally. More than 60% of Pennsylvania’s electricity was produced from natural gas, while over 50% of homes and businesses rely on natural gas and propane for their heating needs. This energy powers homes, businesses and emerging industries like AI-driven data centers, strengthens our efforts to reshore manufacturing, all the while helping to reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions. What’s more, despite being the country’s largest hydrocarbon producing region, the broader Appalachian Basin also has the lowest methane intensity – just 0.06% on average.

Driving Innovation and Infrastructure

As the global demand for energy accelerates, Pennsylvania is rising to the challenge. Projects like those in Lower Burrell and at the former Homer City Generating Station are clear signs of how natural gas is supporting high-tech industries in a way that complements sustainability goals.

Stewardship and Responsibility

Our industry leads with performance. From methane detection and reduction initiatives to advanced water recycling and land restoration efforts, our member companies are committed to responsible development that protects Pennsylvania’s land, water and air. Consider, $64 million was generated from impact fee revenue for statewide environmental programs in 2024.
