Is that the only way it can be extracted?

The safe, tightly-regulated production of clean-burning natural gas involves several fundamental steps: Companies lease mineral rights from land- and mineral-owners; Companies then perform basic earthmoving activities to prepare a drilling location, or a pad site, for the drilling phase in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; A rig arrives and begins the drilling process, […]

Why not invest in Wind and Solar Energy and leave Oil and Natural Gas’s dirty practices to the Cavemen?

Access to affordable, reliable forms of energy are key to a strong, growing and prosperous economy. From manufacturing to transportation to providing a reliable and efficient means to power our homes and businesses, natural gas is a key and growingly important component of our domestic energy portfolio. Wind and solar also play a critical role, […]

Why doesn’t PA tax gas companies as other states do 5-7% seems reasonable as it is our states natural resources you are profiting from?

In addition to the more than $1.6 billion in state taxes that the natural gas industry has paid since 2006 in Pennsylvania, a recently enacted natural gas impact fee has generated $206 million for various programs, with the majority of these revenues going to local communities. Impact fee disbursements were announced by Governor Tom Corbett […]

Where did the name come from?

The Marcellus Shale – considered “the second largest natural gas field in the world” – was named after the town of Marcellus, New York by American geologist James Hall in 1839. Here, the Marcellus Shale formation comes to the surface in the form of outcrops, which is where geologists first learned of the formation.

Why won’t you disclose the hundreds of chemicals you’re pumping into the ground and back into our watershed here in PA?

A common misconception about these additives is that they are not disclosed. In fact, Pennsylvania’s new bipartisan natural gas law, Act 13, requires natural gas producers to register their fracturing solutions, on a well-by-well basis, on Additives used in the hydraulic fracturing process are readily available here on and listed below:   On […]

Do the positives outweigh the negatives?

Absolutely. While natural gas development is indeed a short-term, industrial process, this safe, tightly-regulated production has sparked an American energy revolution – a game-changer – for our nation’s economy and our long-term energy security. From more jobs at a time when they’re most needed, to strengthened energy security and a stronger standing in the global […]

What energy companies are involved?

There are a number of companies involved with responsibly developing natural gas from the Marcellus Shale. The Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) is proud to represent the majority of these companies. A complete list of exploration and production companies (these are the companies that lease land and develop natural gas), midstream companies (midstream companies build and […]

What is the administration doing to address the needs/concerns of the local communities?

Our state government, as well as the region’s natural gas industry, continue to work collaboratively to ensure that the concerns and needs of local communities across the Commonwealth are effectively addressed. In fact, in addition to the more than $1.6 billion in state taxes that the natural gas industry has paid since 2006 in Pennsylvania, […]

What is the estimated capital investment?

The safe, job-creating development of clean-burning American natural gas from the Marcellus Shale is without question a capital intensive undertaking. According to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz School of Business, the estimated total cost of a Marcellus Shale well is $7,651,825. Well costs – which can range from $5-7 million – vary due […]

Where are drilling sites in Potter Co., PA?

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides information on its website to assist the public in identifying well locations in each municipality. This year — as of Oct. 5, 2012 — 21 Marcellus Shale wells have been permitted and only one well has been drilled in Potter County (DEP 2012 overview, pg. 5). To […]
