The Marcellus Shale Coalition opposes a severance tax and for good reason. Despite claims that the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania does not pay enough in taxes, the responsible development of the Marcellus shale continues to generate an enormous amount of revenue for the Commonwealth. Between 2006 and today, the natural gas industry has paid more than $1.6 billion in state and local taxes and $400 million in impact fees. The natural gas industry pays every tax that any other industry doing business in the commonwealth pays and this doesn’t include the hundreds of millions that natural gas companies have invested in road improvements across the commonwealth.
