In the June 9 Forum article “The Way Forward on Shale” (June 9), Carnegie Mellon University president Jared Cohon makes excellent points about the environmental and economic benefits of natural gas. As a CMU graduate, I am proud that the university is involved in this important and ongoing conversation.
As Mr. Cohon made clear, the discussion surrounding natural gas development must be broad-based. We certainly agree and also believe that facts and science are essential to advancing a meaningful dialogue focused on common-sense solutions.
The natural gas industry is deeply committed to protecting and improving our environment and growing the region’s economy. Marcellus Shale Coalition member companies — representing the entire natural gas development supply chain — continue to drive innovation aimed at further reducing our industry’s footprint. In fact, the Marcellus Shale Coalition has developed and published a series of recommended practices over several years to advance these shared goals.
Pennsylvania’s environmental regulations are among the nation’s toughest. These modernized regulations — and our industry’s commitment to protecting our environment — demonstrate that, with natural gas, we don’t have to choose between the environment or the economy.
