The MSC recently interviewed member-company Waste Management Energy Services to learn more about their business and customized environmental & oilfield solutions.

Q. What services does your company provide to support shale development and/or infrastructure expansion in Pennsylvania and this region?

Waste Management Energy Services (WMES) provides a wide range of environmental services across North America, including assisting the needs of the oil / gas exploration, production, and service industries.

Our Energy Services business offers a wide range of environmental waste transportation and disposal services along with an array of other energy industry related services and solutions.

Q. What makes your company stand out from your competitors?

Customers demand professional, safety-oriented and cost-effective solutions for their environmental needs. WMES provides a wide variety of services to the oil and gas exploration industry in the tri-state area.

Generators benefit from our perspectives from other industries and shale plays, the in-house expertise of a fully staffed technical service center that is trained to handle each step of the waste approval, transportation, storage, treatment, recycling, and disposal processes. We understand the demanding energy environment and, as a Fortune 200 company, we are well positioned with experience and infrastructure to be a single, long-term provider of environmental solutions for customers as well as new innovations from other plays and industries.

To bring it full circle, WM is committed to reducing the environmental impacts of our collection vehicles while reducing our emissions and improving fuel efficiency. WM has the largest CNG fleet in North America with over 7,600 CNG trucks and plans to add approximately 1,000 new trucks per year. We also have several public fueling stations in PA.

Waste Management Energy Services has serviced the petrochemical industry for many years. Involvement in the unconventional shale play in the tri-state region has created a nationwide line of business for our company, allowing us to expand Energy Service operations in five other shale plays.

Q. How has the Marcellus Shale Coalition added value to your business?

Waste Management joined the Marcellus Shale Coalition in 2009. Over the past 10 years as an active member, WM employees have participated in lead roles, which provided opportunities to offer insight on regulatory and governmental changes as well as participation in several training sessions.

We have been given the opportunity to present at the annual SHALE INSIGHT Conference, quarterly meetings and safety trainings. The exposure to and alignment with key industry players has been valuable for our operations and business development.

Q. If you could explain one thing to external stakeholders about the opportunities that have been created for your company by the natural gas industry, what would it be? 

The natural gas industry has expanded our book of business and growth. For decades, Waste Management has been safeguarding the land, water and air by setting the standard for environmental compliance as well as the public interface. We understand regulatory framework and environmental protection goals.  Now, we bring this environmental expertise to the natural gas industry by providing comprehensive support and waste services throughout the shale plays.
