Consumers, economy and environment benefit from expanded natural gas production and use.
Nearly all natural gas consumed in the United States last year was produced domestically, as advancements in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies have unlocked abundant American energy resources. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), natural gas production and consumption reached record highs in 2018.
Pennsylvania, responsible for a quarter of U.S. output, is at the tip of the spear, with consumers, our economy and environment directly benefiting from the natural gas production growth.
Thanks to the greater use of clean-burning natural gas in power generation, we’re making significant air quality improvements. Federal data shows that overall greenhouse gas emissions have dropped 13 percent since 2005 and emissions of air pollutants like VOCs, NOX and SOX in Pennsylvania have plummeted.
In addition to environmental gains, Pennsylvanians are realizing significant home energy savings directly due to natural gas production growth. According to state data, Pennsylvania households enjoy average home energy savings of $1,100 to $2,200 annually.
