Methane, the main constituent of natural gas, is not toxic or poisonous and is the cleanest-burning hydrocarbon. It is flammable, so we certainly work to keep it contained, and we have had great success safely producing natural gas.
The President of the American Council on Science and Health recently wrote that hydraulic fracturing does not pollute water or air and that no documented instances of adverse health effects have been linked to the process. The former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator under President Obama, Lisa Jackson, has affirmed many times that there are no proven cases of water contamination from hydraulic fracturing.
