As noted in other questions and as outlined in the Marcellus Shale Coalition’s Guiding Principles, there is no higher priority of our industry that the safe and environmental responsible development of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale. Specifically speaking about protecting aquatic life, there are a few laws and regulations that protect water quality. The Pennsylvania Clean Stream Law, the requirement by Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that mandates an erosion and sediment control permit for each well site and mandated set-back distances from streams and waterway help ensure that natural gas development does not impact surface water and aquatic life.
