This is a common misconception. Marcellus Shale Coalition member companies are in fact disclosing the additives used in the fracturing process and have been for a number of years. Beginning on January 1, 2012, Marcellus Shale Coalition companies voluntarily decided to disclose fracturing fluids on a well-by-well basis via FracFocus, national registry.

From FracFocus.org:

“The site was created to provide the public access to reported chemicals used for hydraulic fracturing within their area. To help users put this information into perspective, the site also provides objective information on hydraulic fracturing, the chemicals used, the purposes they serve and the means by which groundwater is protected.”

This was in addition to the mandatory disclosure of fracturing fluids that are included in well completion reports filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). For additional information on the additives used in the hydraulic fracturing process, be sure to read the MSC’s “In the Spirit of Full Disclosure” fact sheet.
