It isn’t so much a rush, but rather increased awareness of energy development occurring in areas that may not be familiar with the oil and natural gas industry. For example, did you know that more than 350,000 oil and natural gas wells have been drilled in Pennsylvania since 1859? And there are more than 70,000 active oil and natural gas wells in the commonwealth today, not including Marcellus Shale wells? The truth is, oil and gas development has a long and storied history in Pennsylvania.

The difference between the oil and gas industry of yesterday and that of today, is the technological advancements made over the past 10-15  years are opening up new areas and geologic formations to energy development. While geologists have long-known about the Marcellus Shale – after all, the formation is 390 million years old – it was only until recently that scientists and engineers were able to unlock the technology to safely development this resource.
