MSC Member Spotlight: Groundwater & Environmental Services Inc. (GES)

The MSC recently spoke with Mr. Robin B. Raudenbush, Senior Vice President of Oil and Gas for Groundwater & Environmental Services Inc., an environmental consulting firm founded in 1985, to learn about their business and the services they provide for the oil and gas industry. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about GES?

We are scientists, engineers, consultants, hands on technical specialists – but most importantly we are innovators, problem solvers, and trusted partners to the various organizations and operators that count on us to tackle some of their most pressing environmental and infrastructure challenges.

Our primary strength is that we provide a vast array of environmental field compliance services that support all our operators’ compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Our overall operation is to provide field compliance to satisfy the obligations our clients have under their operating permits.

GES is a company that does business the right way. Our core values are centered on safety, the quality and responsiveness of our services, and doing what is right – not only for only our employees, but for our clients and the environment, as well.

We have over 500 employees located in 29 offices nationwide. We see ourselves as a national company, but thanks to our local offices we have regional responsiveness. GES has three offices located in Pennsylvania with over 125 staff that support Marcellus Shale clients. We have been active participants in the MSC since 2009 and in the oil and gas industry for over 34 years.

Q. What makes your company stand out from your competitors?

What makes GES different is that we have a behavioral health and safety program, Loss Prevention Systems (LPS). Health and safety drives what we do day in and day out. The LPS system is a behavioral based safety program. Since it is behavioral, you learn to anticipate, minimize, and manage all risk inherent to our work, as well in our personal lives.

These systems are reflected in our safety statistics. It has been seven years since we have had a lost time injury. Another differentiator for our company is that 45-50% of our staff is boots on the ground. Our field scientists, engineers, geologists work 24/7 for our oil and gas clients.

Q. How has the Marcellus Shale Coalition added value to your business?

A big value is the alignment of our mission in supporting the Marcellus Shale Coalition with our core clients. That means that we all are working on a united front. We are sharing the constant good news and success of what natural gas provides to families and businesses in communities across the region.

Membership also has given GES the opportunity to add additional staff from a hiring perspective while providing significant development and the opportunity to expand our core services supporting our core clients.

Q. If you could explain one thing to external stakeholders about the opportunities that have been created for your company by the natural gas industry, what would it be?

The advancements in oil and gas over the past fifteen years have enhanced the operations for the exploration and production to provide the cleanest energy source of natural gas across the region. We support the ongoing efforts for all the technical advancements so that natural gas can be developed in the safest and cleanest methods possible.

We are obligated – day in and day out – to communicate how clean natural gas is, how technology has driven the leading industry standards, that natural gas is developed safely, and it is the future for not only the region but for US energy independence.
