Produced water is often made up of naturally occurring water found in shale formations coupled with water introduced into the formation during the completions – or hydraulic fracturing phase – that flows up through the wellbore during the life of the well. Like flowback water – or water that returns to the surface immediately following completions operations – produced water is required to be effectively managed, and is commonly recycled and reused for ongoing production operations.
