Why can’t acid mine water be used for fracking instead of fresh water?

It can, and MSC member companies are actively working to make this a reality. We recently commissioned RAND Corporation to research this matter (click here to view that study) and the Pa. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued a white paper on the topic. Additionally, former DEP Secretary Mike Krancer said this about using acid mine drainage for hydraulic fracturing purposes:

  • “This initiative, which combines remediating abandoned mine water with responsible extraction of our natural gas resources, is a win for our environment and our economy.”
