Oil and natural gas development has a long and storied history in Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1859, when the first well was drilled in Titusville, Pa., through to today, more than 350,000 oil and natural gas wells have been drilled in the commonwealth. And while the process of developing oil and natural gas remains fundamentally the same – drill a well, hook it up to a pipeline, deliver the product to consumers – Marcellus Shale wells require much more infrastructure and manpower to fully develop. And in some cases, Marcellus Shale wells are located in areas of the commonwealth that haven’t experienced conventional production in past years.
