Well, we certainly won’t try to speak to the preferences of New Yorkers, but we can offer up some public polling data. A recent Sienna College poll shows that 50% of suburban New Yorkers support natural gas development in upstate New York (compared to 32% who oppose). In New York City, 41% of those polled are supportive. From an AP story on the poll results:

“Kathryn Klaber, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, an industry group, noted that New York residents use large quantities of gas that comes from fracked wells in other states. She noted that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said expanded natural gas use ‘makes good economic and environmental sense.’”
