A common misconception about these additives is that they are not disclosed. In fact, Pennsylvania’s new bipartisan natural gas law, Act 13, requires natural gas producers to register their fracturing solutions, on a well-by-well basis, on Fracfocus.org. On the issue of water management and protecting our watersheds, you should know that our industry does not treat and discharge any flowback or produced water at the surface. Rather, technologies continue to advance, by the day, that allows more water to be recycled and reused for future operations. This is a clear environmental winner. In fact, according to the most recent data gathered by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Marcellus Shale natural gas producers in are recycling and reusing, in some cases, more than 90 percent of flowback water. The remaining water is disposed of in EPA-approved and permitted underground injection wells.
