Founded in 2008 and formally organized as a 501(c)6 organization in late 2009, the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) – made up of just over 300 member companies – works with exploration and production, midstream, and supply chain partners across the Appalachian Basin (primarily in Pennsylvania) and on national issues that could impact our members in this region. We address issues regarding the production of clean, job-creating, American natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays.

We provide in-depth information, to policymakers, regulators, media, and other public stakeholders on the process of how natural gas is extracted and transported to market. This information is often technical in nature, so that the new regulations are written in a way that is safe and workable. We also focus on the positive impacts responsible natural gas production is having on families, businesses, and communities across the region. This information comes from the day-to-day work that our staff and our members do with the businesses, who are growing and prospering because of this development.

We also collect the information produced by state and national departments of labor and industry, revenue, and other agencies that quantify the economic impact and job creation by the natural gas industry, the resulting costs of energy to consumers, as well as the energy statistics that reflect how much shale gas is being produced and how that natural gas is being used by consumers.

In 2010, the MSC developed a broad set of Guiding Principles that are used to guide the work of the organization and its members.

Our organization is funded primarily by membership dues. We receive no government funds.

A full list of both our board member (exploration & production and midstream) companies is available here; our associate members are available here.
